Our Process
When you bring your vehicle to Pitt Stop Tire & Auto for any braking concern, our expert technicians conduct a comprehensive 55-point inspection of your entire brake system — not just the pads.
We take the time to thoroughly explain your car's condition, identifying which problems are critical and which can be addressed later. We discuss the best options for your budget and provide a written estimate before performing any repairs.
The braking system is one of your vehicle's most vital safety elements. The capacity to stop in a fraction of a second is the key to preventing accidents — and all parts must be in good condition for the system to work effectively.
The master cylinder is the first and most important component in your braking system. Activated by pressing the brake pedal, it pushes a piston through the cylinder to force brake fluid through the brake lines, creating hydraulic pressure at each wheel.
Pressurized brake fluid is the medium by which all mechanical brake components are triggered. Sent from the reservoir through the lines to the calipers or wheel cylinders, it also acts as a lubricant with anti-corrosion additives to keep your system healthy.
Found only in disc brake systems, calipers act as metal clamps at each wheel. When the pedal is applied, brake fluid activates pistons inside the caliper, pressing the brake pads against the rotor to slow the vehicle.
Auto Repair 101
The most common and efficient stopping mechanism on modern vehicles. Found on front wheels — the wheels that require the most stopping force. They also manage more heat than rear brakes.
Disc brakes with added functionality that prevents wheels from locking during a skid — which can cause hydroplaning and loss of vehicle control.
Operates independently of your service brakes. Engaged by shutting off your engine and pulling the lever or pressing a button while releasing the brake pedal.
Commonly found on rear wheels. Less technically complex than disc brakes and typically sufficient for rear-wheel stopping requirements on many vehicles.

FAQs
In general, brake pads should be replaced every 25,000 to 70,000 miles depending on your driving habits. Rotors typically last 50,000 to 70,000 miles. Many manufacturers also recommend replacing brake fluid every 30,000 miles.
We recommend having a trained technician inspect your brakes every 10,000 miles, or immediately if you notice any warning signs such as squealing, grinding, or a soft pedal.
When you bring your vehicle into Pitt Stop, our technicians conduct a comprehensive 55-point inspection of your entire brake system. We then explain exactly what's critical, what can wait, and what your options are — with a written estimate before any work begins.
We strongly advise against it. Worn brakes dramatically increase your stopping distance and the risk of an accident. If you're hearing grinding or your pedal feels soft, call us or bring your vehicle in right away.
