Cedarville is a charming village in Greene County with deep roots, a thriving university, and a close-knit community feel. Located at the crossroads of State Route 72 and US Route 42, it's a small town that punches well above its weight.
The village was first settled in 1799 by Irish and Scottish immigrants drawn to the rich farmland along Massie Creek. Originally called Milford, the name was changed to Cedarville in 1834 to reflect the abundance of cedar trees in the area. With a population of about 4,200, it still has the feel of the quiet farming community it has always been.
Cedarville University is the heart of the village. This private Christian university sits on an 850-acre campus on the north side of town and enrolls more than 5,000 students. The university brings energy, events, and economic vitality to the community — from theatrical performances at the DeVries Theater to sporting events and guest lectures that are open to the public.
The Cedarville Opera House, built in 1888, is a beautifully restored landmark on Main Street and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Designed as a one-third scale replica of London's Royal Albert Hall, it hosts concerts, plays, and community events throughout the year.
Indian Mound Reserve is one of Cedarville's crown jewels. This 169-acre park just outside the village features the ancient Williamson Adena Mound, the scenic Massie Creek Gorge, over eight miles of hiking trails, a restored 1800s log house, and the beautiful Cedar Cliff Falls — one of the most impressive waterfalls in western Ohio.
CedarFest is the village's signature annual event. Held every Labor Day weekend, this festival celebrates Cedarville's distinction as the birthplace of James H. Kyle, the U.S. Senator known as the "Father of Labor Day." The weekend features a parade, vendors, live entertainment, and a fireworks display in Cedar Park.
The village is also a gateway to some of Greene County's best outdoor attractions. Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve and the Historic Clifton Mill are just minutes away, along with the vibrant community of Yellow Springs and the trails of John Bryan State Park. The Prairie Grass Trail, part of the Ohio to Erie Trail network, passes right through Cedarville — perfect for biking and walking.
Cedarville families are served by the Cedar Cliff Local School District, which operates Cedarville Elementary School, Cedarville Middle School, and Cedarville High School — all housed in one combined building in the village.
Notable Cedarville residents include Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, journalist and diplomat Whitelaw Reid, film actress Eleanor Parker, and Bible teacher David Jeremiah.
