Spring Valley is a small, peaceful village in southern Greene County that feels like stepping back in time. With a population of about 415, it's one of the most charming and well-preserved communities in the region — and it sits right in the middle of some of southwest Ohio's best natural areas.
The village was founded in 1844 by Edward Walton and his son Moses, Quakers from Virginia who were drawn to the area's rich farmland and natural springs along the Little Miami River. The town grew up at the crossroads of two important transportation routes — the Cincinnati-Xenia Pike and the Little Miami Railroad — making it an early agricultural hub for the surrounding area.
When State Route 42 was rerouted in 1954 to bypass Main Street's steep hill, Spring Valley was spared from heavy traffic and development. That's a big reason the village still has the quiet, unhurried character of a 19th-century Ohio community. Many of the village's original buildings are still standing, and the streets are shaded and walkable.
The George Barrett Concrete House is one of Spring Valley's most unique landmarks. Built in the 1840s, it's one of the first concrete homes constructed in the Midwest. Barrett built the house using river rock and concrete mortar reinforced with animal hair, and even published a book about his method called Home for the Millions. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Ohio Bicentennial Commission placed a historical marker at the site in 2003.
The Annual Potato Festival is Spring Valley's biggest event. Held every October, this community celebration features potato soup, potato candy, potato sundaes, arts and crafts, a parade, live entertainment, a farmers market, and the "Tater Trot" 5K run/walk along the Little Miami Scenic Trail. The festival is organized by the Association of Community and Township Services (ACTS) and raises funds for the community library, Bledsoe Park, the volunteer fire department, local scholarships, and preservation of the Barrett House.
The Little Miami Scenic Trail runs right through Spring Valley, giving residents direct access to one of Ohio's most popular paved bike and walking paths. The trail follows the route of the old Little Miami Railroad and connects to the larger Miami Valley trail network — more than 350 miles of paths stretching across the region. The Buckeye Trail also passes through the village, and the Little Miami River — Ohio's first designated State Scenic River — runs right along its edge, offering kayaking, canoeing, and fishing.
The Spring Valley Wildlife Area is an 842-acre natural reserve located just east of the village. It features an 80-acre lake, a 150-acre marsh and wetland complex, woods, meadows, and a 2.5-mile observation trail that circles the marsh. More than 230 species of birds have been identified here, making it one of the top birdwatching destinations in southwest Ohio. The wildlife area also offers fishing, hunting, and a public shooting range.
Other Spring Valley highlights include Walton Park (named for the village founders, with playing fields, parking, and a picnic pavilion), Bledsoe Park (home to the monthly summer concert series), Constitution Park on the Little Miami River (with a canoe launch and free primitive camping), the Funk Nature Sanctuary (a 21-acre protected area on the river), and the nearby Travertine Fen — a rare protected wetland fed by natural springs. Weaver's Apple Country Farm is also nearby, offering seasonal pumpkins, apples, fresh cider, and homemade apple butter every fall.
Spring Valley is located midway between Waynesville and Xenia on US Route 42, and is also accessible via State Route 725 from the Bellbrook and Centerville areas.
