The Caesar Creek area sits at the border of Greene County and Warren County in southwest Ohio. It's a quiet, rural community centered around Caesarscreek Township, with Caesar Creek State Park as its most well-known landmark. For people who live here, the appeal is simple — wide open farmland, gorgeous natural areas, and a peaceful way of life that's still just a short drive from Dayton, Cincinnati, and everything in between.
Caesarscreek Township is one of twelve townships in Greene County. With a population of about 1,200, it's a tight-knit, rural community where most residents own their homes and enjoy a genuinely country lifestyle. The township was established in 1803 — the same year Ohio became a state.
One of the township's most treasured landmarks is the Engle Mill Road Covered Bridge. Originally built in 1877, this 136-foot Smith Truss bridge spans Anderson Fork and is one of the longest of its type still standing in the country. It carried vehicular traffic until 2003 and was beautifully restored in 2013–2014 with the help of a Federal Covered Bridge Restoration Grant. Today it stands as a piece of living history and one of several restored covered bridges you can tour throughout Greene County.
The nearby community of Middleton Corner — little more than a crossroads at US Route 68 and Spring Valley-Paintersville Road — dates back to around 1825 and is one of those blink-and-you-miss-it hamlets that tells the story of early Ohio settlement.
Caesar Creek State Park is the crown jewel of the area and one of the most popular state parks in southwest Ohio. Located on State Route 73 between Waynesville and Wilmington, the park covers nearly 7,900 acres and is built around the 2,830-acre Caesar Creek Lake — created in the 1970s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control on the Little Miami River.
The park offers something for just about everyone. Boating is a major draw — there are five boat launch ramps, a marina with over 100 seasonal slips, and no horsepower limit on the lake. The park also features a 1,300-foot public swimming beach, campgrounds, and miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. The Perimeter Trail runs more than 12 miles around the lake, and popular routes like the Flat Fork Ridge Trail feature waterfalls, a swinging bridge, and scenic views of the lake and gorge.
One of the most unique attractions at Caesar Creek is fossil hunting at the spillway. When the Army Corps of Engineers blasted out the emergency spillway, they exposed layers of Ordovician limestone and shale dating back roughly 450 million years. With a free permit from the Visitor Center, families can search for fossils of ancient sea creatures — brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids, horn coral, and if you're lucky, trilobites. No tools are needed, and kids love it.
The Caesar Creek Gorge State Nature Preserve, located just south of the dam, features a dramatic 180-foot deep gorge carved by glacial meltwater. The gorge displays unique geological formations and is surrounded by dense woodlands — a destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
The Caesar Creek Pioneer Village, situated within the park, features reconstructed buildings from the late 1700s and early 1800s that illustrate what daily life looked like for Ohio's earliest settlers. The centerpiece is the Levi Lukens cabin, built in 1807.
The park also has deep historical roots. The area is named after Caesar, an enslaved man captured by the Shawnee who was adopted into the tribe and given this valley as his hunting ground. The construction of the lake in 1978 flooded the small farming village of New Burlington, whose story was preserved in the book New Burlington: The Life and Death of an American Village by John Baskin.
The Caesar Creek area is surrounded by several small communities, including Waynesville (the "Antiques Capital of the Midwest" and home of the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival), Spring Valley (home of the annual Potato Festival and the Spring Valley Wildlife Area), Harveysburg, and Corwin. The Little Miami Scenic Trail and Little Miami River run through the area, connecting these communities by bike path and waterway.
